Loudon County Sheriff Tim Guider would like to remind area citizens to be aware of the summertime scams and cons that appear every year. While most businesses are legitimate, there are many criminals that prey on honest citizens. Common scams include asphalt paving, landscaping, and roof repair. Common business practice is to make around a 10-15% down payment on a contract, with the rest to be paid upon completion. He advises citizens to be aware of any contractor that asks for half or the entire amount before doing any work or purchasing any materials. Many con artists attempt to get money up front then never show back up to do the work, which is considered theft; others give the story that they have materials left over from the last job and can make you a quick deal.

Some helpful hints include:

Having a written contract;

Discussion of terms of payment up front;

Get at least three quotes from different contractors;

Ask contractors for references, copies of their business license, and proof of insurance.

Do not make any quick decisions no matter how great the deal sounds or what kind of pressure is being used to try to make you decide.

Any door-to-door solicitors in the county are required to be registered daily with the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office. Solicitor registration can be verified, as can any contractor you may be suspicious of, by calling the Sheriff’s Office at 986-4823 to check registration or on-going investigations.
