Bail Bond and Social Network Scams

Loudon County Sheriff Tim Guider would like to advise area citizens to be aware of a well-know scam that has now been appearing locally.

The scam artist will either e-mail from a hacked account or make a phone call to a person advising that their child, grandchild, or close friend has been arrested and that a bondsman will call about helping them be released from jail. They will then have the victim send money, usually through MoneyGram or Western Union, under the pretense they are helping the family member or friend. The money then usually ends up in Canada or the United Kingdom.

If you receive this type of e-mail or call, first attempt to locate the friend or family member (who may even be at home), then to contact the Sheriff’s Department before sending money to anyone.

Another similar scam involves e-mails from a hacked e-mail account or a hacked social network site (Facebook, MySpace, etc) that appears to be from the actual person, saying they are on vacation, have had car trouble, or some other problem, and ask money be sent to them. People are more trusting of this because they feel they are making personal contact with a friend or family member, but in reality the con artist is hiding behind someone else’s name. Again, if you receive this type of e-mail, first attempt to locate the friend or family member, and contact the Sheriff’s Department before sending money to anyone.
