ARREST FOR COUNTERFEITING U.S. CURRENCY

Today Sheriff Tim Guider announced the arrest of Joey Eugene Riden, age 44, of 100 Jones Drive in Greenback for counterfeiting U.S. Currency.

The Loudon County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) has worked for several days on an investigation into Riden’s making of counterfeit bills. Sheriff Guider advised that on November 1st, the CID unit, along with two agents from the U.S. Secret Service, executed a search warrant at the Riden residence. Several counterfeit bills were found inside the home, along with a printer, copy paper, and spray paint. Inside the scanner part of the printer was a genuine $20 bill. Riden was also in possession of counterfeit bills in denominations of $1, $5, $10 and $20 in addition to misprints of the same. Mr. Riden did admit that he was the lone person producing the fake bills. None of his fake bills made it into circulation.

The Secret Service was notified at the beginning of the investigation because they will prosecute counterfeit bill cases, and counterfeiting has been on the rise for the last several months.

At this time, Riden is charged with three (3) felony counts of Criminal Simulation, each with a $10,000 bond; one (1) count of Violation of the Sex Offender Registry with a $5,000 Bond; and one (1) count of Failure to Appear with no bond.

Sheriff Guider also recommended being aware that counterfeit currency usage could be on the rise during the upcoming holiday season because it is easier to pass counterfeit bills when stores have long lines.
